International Women’s Day Breakfast
On Friday 13th March Northern Highlands Soroptimists held their annual breakfast at the Bowling Club to celebrate International Women’s Day. Catering by The Friday Fillies assisted by members preceded an entertaining address and video presentation by The Fillies- Leanne Beyer and Margie Simpson. They travelled in the “Shit Box”-a vehicle worth no more than $1000-from Melbourne to Townsville on dirt roads through towns with very few facilities for visitors. The girls joined the 600 rally participants in a rain dance at Jundah in Queensland in their bright attire. It was successful, resulting in rains 2 weeks later. In completing the rally the Fillies demonstrated that gender is no barrier to achievement and made us feel empowered by their experience, which raised funds for cancer. An enjoyable and enlightening start to our day.
Our March meeting was addressed by Molly Noonan-Northern Areas Young Citizen of the Year- and Amy Hagger, who is currently secretary of the Jamestown Agricultural and Horticultural Society. The girls gave us a very uplifting talk on the vitality of the show committee. Molly is secretary of the wool and sheep committee and the only female on the committee. No doubt her farming background helps. Amy works for Baptcare and is a busy mother of two sons. The future of the show is in capable hands and inspires support when we see the commitment and ‘can do ‘ attitude of the girls.
