Citizen of the Year: Barry Harvie The 2024 Citizen of the Year honour goes to Barry Harvie. With a long-standing association across his community, Barry has been an exemplary citizen, showing unwavering dedication to various organisations over the years across many towns. Barry currently serves as the Chairperson for the Laura Caravan Park and the Rocky River School Ministry Support Group. In addition, his volunteer work extends to Laura Community Development & Tourism Association, Lutheran Church, Rocky River Historic and Art Society, Caltowie Corridors of Green, Southern Flinders Tourism Group and Meals on Wheels. He also plays the role of Father Christmas for various community organisations. Barry is recognised locally as a Justice of Peace, showcasing his strong commitment to both the immediate and broader community.
Event of the Year: National Shearing and Wool Handling Competition The stand out event of the year was the National Shearing and Wool Handling Competition held in Jamestown in October 2023. The event brought together over 170 local and international competitors – and 600 attendees – from across Australia and New Zealand. The economic and social impact of this event on the Northern Areas region was substantial, with a significant influx of visitors from interstate and international locations. The success of this event demonstrates the power of collaboration and community spirit in hosting events of national significance.
Young Citizen of the Year: Jane Henderson The title of Young Citizen of the Year is awarded to Jane Henderson. Jane’s dedication to community service is remarkable. From her role as a greenkeeper at the local bowls club to coaching netball teams and volunteering for Frontier Services, she consistently goes above and beyond to support her community. Jane’s commitment extends to helping elderly residents with tasks they may find challenging, showcasing her compassionate and caring nature.
Award for Active Citizenship: Sam Lang The Award for Active Citizenship is awarded to Sam Lang, a dedicated community leader whose commitment to encouraging volunteering has left a mark on Jamestown and its surrounding areas. Sam Lang’s leadership through action sets him apart. He possesses a laid-back nature but is a powerhouse when it comes to getting things done behind the scenes, ensuring the success of various community programs and projects.
