Northern Highlands Soroptimist Club members will celebrate the Club’s 34th Birthday on July 16th. Any past members or prospective members are invited to attend the Birthday dinner. If you are interested in attending, please call Margie Simpson on 0418 839 901 before 12th July.

The Club continues to hear from interesting speakers at their meetings. The latest guest speaker was Monika Jackson, McGrath Foundation Breast Care Nurse

Monika spoke on her work with the McGrath Foundation in the Mid North area. Her nursing career, including as a respiratory nurse, has extended over 30 years.

‘Support when it is needed’ is the motto of the Foundation. Early access significantly improves the experience for the patients. From 57 people diagnosed 1 in 7 are women. Over 200 men are diagnosed with breast cancer each year. Currently 204 Breast Care Nurses in Australia including 31 in South Australia, with the target being 250. Anyone aged 40 to 74 are encouraged to have a breast screen. Chemotherapy is available at Port Pirie for treatment in some cases. A Breast Care Nurse is a person’s contact directly from diagnosis. Statistics show that 95% of cases are alive at 5 years after treatment.

Members are looking forward to welcoming Annabelle Homer, former ABC journalist now Podcast host, producer, MC and Voice Coach, living in the Clare Valley to the August meeting. Anyone interested in hearing Annabelle’s presentation is invited to contact Margie Simpson for meeting venue details.

The Club meets on the third Tuesday of each month at various venues with guest speakers as well as general business meetings.
