Members of the Northern Highlands Soroptimist Club are extremely proud of the ‘Be Wigged’ Wig Library at Jamestown and were delighted to be recognised at the recent Service Clubs Association of SA award presentations. The Wig Library was runner-up in the Health section of the Premier’s Awards which were presented by South Australian Premier Steven Marshall at the Glenelg Golf Club on Sunday October 31.
The Wig Library has been set up to allow women and men access to a wig at nominal cost if needed because of a Medical Condition. Having access to a wig close to home takes away some of the worry at a time when they are at a low point in their lives. They are able to select their wig in a quiet and welcoming atmosphere with friends or family members in attendance. Purchasing a wig in Adelaide at $500 or more proves challenging when they are often very unwell.
In 2018 the Soroptimist members, supported by Northern Areas Council and community members, set up a room at the Jamestown Town Hall which has been described as ‘appropriately well done and welcoming’.
The wigs are available not only to Cancer sufferers but anyone with a medical condition. Along with the wigs purchased by the Club, generous community members have donated wigs and hair pieces to the Library which means that ‘there is a wig for everyone!’
The Wig Library has become very well known in the South Australian wider community and is ‘unfortunately’ being visited quite frequently by clients from the Mid North, Yorke Peninsula and other areas.
